Russian Soldier Massacres Comrade and Three Civilians in Occupied Crimea Shooting Spree

A Russian soldier opened fire on fellow servicemen and civilians in temporarily occupied Crimea, killing four people and injuring several others, occupation authorities said on August 4.

Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-installed head of Sevastopol, said the serviceman first fired at members of his own unit, killing one soldier and wounding another.
The gunman then traveled to the village of Khmelnytske, southeast of Sevastopol, where he shot three local residents—a 71-year-old man, a 59-year-old man, and a 64-year-old woman.
Occupation officials reported that several civilians were also wounded. Initial accounts differed on the number, placing it between two and three people.
The suspect was detained, and investigators were working at the scene. Russian authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the shooting.
Crimea has remained under Russian occupation since Moscow illegally attempted to annex the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014. Russia has since expanded its military presence there and used the territory as a major logistics and operational hub during its full-scale war against Ukraine.
The shooting follows other deadly incidents within Russia’s military. In November 2025, Russian authorities searched for a serviceman suspected of killing seven fellow soldiers at a military base in the Leningrad region before fleeing the scene.
