Russian Strikes Hit Kherson and Odesa, Damaging a Food Truck and Civilian Shelter

Russian forces struck southern Ukraine on August 5, hitting a grocery delivery truck with an FPV drone in central Kherson and, in bystanders reports, a building used as a civilian shelter in Odesa.

Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that the drone hit the city's Central district at around 10:00 a.m., when an enemy FPV drone targeted a truck carrying food to one of Kherson's supermarkets.

"As a result of the strike, the vehicle completely burned," Prokudin wrote, adding that emergency crews from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) extinguished the resulting fire. He noted that no information on casualties had been received.

The truck and its trailer of goods were consumed by the blaze. Local outlet MOST, cited by RBC-Ukraine, identified the vehicle as belonging to the ATB retail chain, one of Ukraine's largest supermarket networks.

FPV drones are small, remotely piloted quadcopters guided by a live video feed and fitted with an explosive charge. Inexpensive and short-range, they were developed for use against armored vehicles and personnel near the front but have increasingly been turned against civilian traffic in frontline areas such as Kherson.

Reports from Odesa remained unconfirmed. Local monitoring channels and eyewitnesses indicated that a Russian munition hit a building used by residents as a bomb shelter during an air raid alert, sparking a fire and causing significant damage.

The scale of the consequences and the condition of anyone inside were still being clarified, and no official confirmation had been issued.

Official figures came from Ukraine's Air Command South. In the 24 hours to 09:30 on August 5, southern air defenses shot down or suppressed 17 Shahed-type attack drones, including jet-powered variants and Gerbera decoys, along with 87 drones of other types.

The command added that Russian forces struck the Odesa region with two Onyx supersonic anti-ship missiles and a Kh-31P anti-radar missile.

The strike on the delivery truck fits a broader pattern of Russian attacks on Kherson's civilian infrastructure in recent weeks.

In late July, Russian strikes across the Kherson region killed two people and injured 24, and damaged the city's trolleybus power network, temporarily suspending electric public transport.
