Russian ZALA Spy Drone Climbs to 6.4 km—Ukraine Still Catches It

Ukrainian National Guard operators have destroyed a Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance drone at an altitude of 6,400 meters, marking one of the highest confirmed interceptor drone engagements recorded by the service, according to statements released by the National Guard and Lasar’s Group on July 29.

The interception took place in southern Ukraine in late July and was carried out by operators from the National Guard’s Lasar’s Group unmanned systems unit. National Guard Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko shared footage of the engagement and described the mission in a statement published on Facebook.

“At the end of July in southern Ukraine, an interceptor crew detected and destroyed this enemy UAV designed for reconnaissance and target detection at distances exceeding 100 kilometers. Hoping to avoid being shot down, the enemy raised the drone to an altitude of 6,400 meters. However, this did not prevent our crew from completing its mission. The pilot caught up with the target and successfully destroyed it.”

According to the National Guard, Russian forces attempted to protect the aircraft by operating it at unusually high altitude, but the fixed-wing interceptor drone was able to reach and destroy the target. The service said the engagement represents one of the highest-altitude drone interceptions achieved by its personnel.

The Russian ZALA Z-20 reconnaissance UAV was first introduced in 2023. According to the manufacturer, it has an operational range exceeding 100 kilometers, an endurance of more than six hours, and a maximum takeoff weight of 18 kilograms.

Equipped with an HD camera, the drone is designed for long-range surveillance and target identification. Russian forces are known to use the platform for battlefield reconnaissance and to help direct Lancet loitering munitions onto targets.

The latest interception follows a series of reported operations by Lasar’s Group against Russian military assets. In late June, the unit struck Buk-M3 and S-300V air defense systems near Kostiantynivka. Earlier in July, the National Guard said Lasar’s Group, operating alongside the Ukrainian Air Force, also hit another Buk-M3 system and two Russian command posts.
