Russia’s Ballistic Attack on Kyiv Shows the Real Cost of Trump-Putin Diesel Deal, Zelenskyy Says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the Trump-Putin diesel deal after Russia launched a daytime ballistic missile attack on Kyiv on October 10, warning that allowing Moscow to earn more from petroleum exports would fuel further Russian attacks on Ukraine.

In a statement on October 10, Zelenskyy said Russian forces launched ballistic missiles at Kyiv following repeated attacks by jet-powered Shahed drones against Ukrainian energy infrastructure. Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept some of the incoming missiles.

“What allowing Russia to sell petroleum products means was heard most clearly in Kyiv today,” Zelenskyy said, warning that Moscow intends to continue its war, terrorize civilians, and destroy infrastructure.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on October 10, a Russian missile struck a restaurant building in the capital’s Obolonskyi district, sparking a fire and injuring four people, one of whom was in serious condition.

At another location in the same district, missile debris fell into the courtyard of a residential building.
Ukraine’s Air Force had warned of multiple missiles heading toward Kyiv shortly before explosions rocked the capital. Local reports described three to four explosions during the attack, while Ukrainian air defenses engaged incoming threats.
Zelenskyy warned that additional Russian oil revenues would directly finance Moscow’s military operations.

“Every additional billion dollars they can earn from exports will be spent precisely on this,” he said, referring to the purchase of critical components, weapons-production equipment, upgraded Shahed drones, missiles, and additional troops.
“Russia’s choice is war,” Zelenskyy declared, adding that Moscow would only be prepared to stop fighting once its ability to prolong the invasion was reduced. He called for stronger action from Washington, Europe, and other international partners to support Ukraine and restrict Russia’s ability to wage war.

The remarks followed Trump’s October 9 announcement of a diesel supply agreement with Putin, under which Russia would deliver petroleum products to the United States and global markets.
Trump said Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel, with additional shipments planned afterward. The US Treasury also issued a temporary license easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports.
