Spanish-Speaking Volunteers Find Russian Officer in Basement and Add Him to Ukraine’s POW Pool

Two foreign volunteers serving with Ukraine’s 141st Separate Mechanized Brigade captured a Russian officer after discovering him hiding in the basement of a building in the Donetsk region, the brigade reported on September 7.
The soldiers, identified by their call signs Orejas and Siete, serve with the brigade’s 1st Mechanized Battalion and were conducting a sweep of an area during the summer when they heard suspicious noises coming from a basement.

Before approaching the building, the troops radioed nearby Ukrainian units to make sure no friendly personnel were operating inside.
After confirming that the person in the basement was a Russian soldier, the volunteers threw several grenades into the position before ordering him to surrender.
There was one unusual detail: they issued the command in their native Spanish.
The Russian soldier apparently understood the message well enough. He emerged from the basement with his hands raised and surrendered to the Ukrainian troops.
The prisoner was subsequently identified as a Russian military officer.
The 141st Brigade said his capture represented a valuable addition to Ukraine’s pool of Russian prisoners of war available for future exchanges.
Earlier, Colombian volunteers serving with Ukraine’s military took part in a clearing operation that eliminated a Russian position and captured one Russian serviceman near the frontline settlement of Stepnohirsk in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region.
