Trump Wants Zelenskyy and Putin to Sign Peace Deal at Miami G20 Summit, Even if He Has to Strong-Arm Kyiv

US President Donald Trump aims to broker a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia during the upcoming G20 summit scheduled for December at his golf club in Florida.
According to advisers cited by The Atlantic, Trump wants to secure the deal even if he has to strong-arm Ukraine to do it.

Advisors indicate the American president envisions himself standing directly between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin at the signing ceremony.
Prior to the December summit, a potential meeting among the leaders of the US, China, and Russia could take place in China in November. Reports indicate Trump is captivated by the prospect of these three powers establishing distinct spheres of influence.
Inner circles in Washington view Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine as an impediment to future economic arrangements with Moscow, including potential contracts involving diesel fuel and rare earth minerals extraction, according to The Atlantic.

Achieving these economic deals may involve pressuring Ukraine to drop its claims to the Donbas region. Figures around the administration have reportedly dismissed Ukraine’s independence, describing it as “a corrupt backwater with no autonomy.”
“Right now, he’s furious at Ukraine, and he wants Zelenskyy gone,” one outside Trump ally told The Atlantic.
Ukrainian officials have expressed growing concern regarding their exclusion from high-level decision-making. One official noted, “It looks like this is all happening without us,” while another said, “Our worry is that they are looking at this as a new Yalta Conference, to divide the world into spheres of influence,” The Atlantic reported.
Despite concerns about unilateral decision-making by foreign powers, Ukrainian leadership maintains its willingness to engage in international forums while rejecting external ultimatums.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed his intention to attend the G20 summit and meet with Putin to achieve a fair resolution, while reaffirming that Ukraine will not make territorial concessions to the aggressor. Earlier demands from Washington for a rapid ceasefire have included restrictions on Ukrainian operations, such as requests to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries.
Previously, Trump expressed willingness to participate in a trilateral summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
However, he stated that the discussions would focus primarily on nuclear weapons and disarmament rather than ending Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, according to Forbes Breaking News on October 19. Speaking to reporters, Trump noted that he would consider attending such a meeting while downplaying the need to address the situation in Ukraine as its central topic.
