Ukraine and France Sign Contract for Air Defense Radars and Interceptor Missiles

Ukraine and France have signed a contract for the supply of air defense radars and interceptor missiles, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on September 22.

“We are strengthening its [Ukraine’s] air defense by signing a contract for the supply of radars, as well as the supply of interceptors,” Macron wrote on X.
The French president did not specify the types or number of radars and interceptor missiles covered by the agreement, nor did he provide a timeline for their delivery.

The agreement was announced following talks between Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which focused primarily on security and a winter support package for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine is also prepared to secure additional SAMP/T air defense systems and missiles using financial resources available under an EU loan.
The two countries are also working toward potentially producing SAMP/T systems and their missiles in Ukraine, according to Zelenskyy.

In parallel, Ukraine and its partners are advancing the joint FREYJA anti-ballistic missile program, with Zelenskyy saying Kyiv expects the first results as early as this year.
“We are doing everything we can to strengthen the protection of our people,” Zelenskyy said.
The air defense cooperation comes as France and Ukraine also deepen ties in combat aviation. France is preparing to begin initial training for Ukrainian pilots expected to transition to Rafale fighter jets as Kyiv moves toward integrating the French-made aircraft into its fleet.
