Ukraine Rejects Russian Claims of Strike on Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant

According to the ministry’s statement on May 31, Russia’s accusations are aimed at diverting international attention from its continued occupation of the facility, which Ukraine and the IAEA recognize as Ukrainian territory under Russian control.
The Foreign Ministry stated that Russia regularly launches similar information campaigns before IAEA Board meetings and noted that the latest claims emerged ahead of the agency’s June session, where member states are expected to review key reports on nuclear safeguards and safety.

Ukraine also called on IAEA member states not to support Russia’s re-election to the agency’s Board of Governors, arguing that Moscow’s actions at the Zaporizhzhia plant remain a threat to nuclear safety.
Earlier, Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom claimed that Ukraine had struck the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Ukraine’s Southern Defense Forces denied the allegation, stating that Ukrainian troops had not targeted the facility.
