Coming after a string of similar strikes this week, the attacks suggest Kyiv is broadening its pressure campaign from military infrastructure to the commercial vessels that help Russia sustain both its war effort and oil exports.

Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces (SBS) struck nine tankers belonging to Russia's so-called “shadow fleet” in the Sea of Azov during an overnight operation on July 8, as reported by the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert “Madyar” Brovdi.

According to Brovdi, Ukrainian drone units have hit a total of 19 shadow fleet tankers, one cargo vessel, and one ferry in the Kerch area over the past 72 hours.

The operation was carried out by drone operators from the Kairos unit of the 414th Separate Brigade of the Unmanned Systems Forces, known as “Birds of Madyar,” together with the 413th Separate Battalion “Raid” and the 1st Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces.

Brovdi also said Ukrainian drones struck 53 Russian military targets overnight in occupied Crimea and the southern occupied territories of Ukraine.

“As part of the "Crimean Switch Off" campaign, Ukrainian forces targeted six additional electrical substations overnight, bringing the total number of energy facilities struck between July 1 and July 8 to 50, along with other sensitive targets. A detailed report will follow,” the SBS commander added.

Separately, Rostov region Governor Yury Slyusar reported that overnight July 8 two tankers were damaged in an overnight drone attack in the Taganrog Bay, claiming the incident injured two people but caused no oil spill.

According to Slyusar, both tankers were traveling without cargo, preventing any petroleum leakage. He added that the crew of one vessel was evacuated, while the extent of the damage remains under assessment.

The governor said two people were injured in the attack. One was treated at the scene, while the other was taken to hospital. Both later declined hospitalization after medical examination.

According to him, the attack affected 11 districts of Rostov region, as well as the cities of Novoshakhtinsk and Kamensk-Shakhtinsky, in addition to the waters of Taganrog Bay.

The latest strikes come as Ukraine continues a 40-day strategic operation, authorized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and led by the Security Service of Ukraine, focused on degrading Russia's military capabilities through attacks on defense facilities, logistics hubs, and strategic energy infrastructure.
