Ukraine is testing five high-speed interceptor drone designs intended to counter Russia’s jet-powered attack drones, with one model expected to enter production at a rate of around 400 units by the end of October, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Financial Times, as reported by RBC-Ukraine on October 2.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine is accelerating efforts to develop interceptors capable of engaging the faster jet-powered drones increasingly used by Russia in aerial attacks.

Of the five interceptor designs currently under development, one has advanced far enough for Ukraine to potentially manufacture approximately 400 units by the end of October. The remaining four models are still undergoing testing.

However, Zelenskyy said engine shortages remain a major obstacle to scaling up interceptor production, as Ukraine continues to depend heavily on imports. While some engines are produced domestically, he said current output is insufficient to meet production needs.

The development of new interceptor drones comes as Ukraine works to expand its domestically produced weapons capabilities. On October 1, Zelenskyy announced the first combat deployment of Ukraine’s FP-7 tactical ballistic missile during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Footage published on his official social media channels showed the missile being launched from an undisclosed location.

“Ukrainian tactical ballistics. FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the result. Next is production. Glory to Ukraine!” Zelenskyy wrote alongside the footage.

Ukraine’s push to develop faster interceptors also comes as Russia expands production of jet-powered attack drones. Russia is manufacturing approximately 2,000 Geran-4 and Geran-5 drones per month and has accumulated an estimated stockpile of 10,000 conventional piston-engine strike UAVs.
