Russia’s Geran-5 Is Jet-Powered—Ukraine Built P1-SUN JetKiller to Hunt It

A Ukrainian-made P1-SUN JetKiller interceptor drone has destroyed a Russian jet-powered Geran-5 attack UAV, Ukrainian manufacturer SkyFall told Ukrinform on September 30.

According to the outlet, the Russian drone was intercepted by operators from Lasar’s Group, a unit of Ukraine’s National Guard specializing in unmanned systems.
“The target was destroyed by unmanned systems operators from Lasar’s Group of the National Guard of Ukraine,” SkyFall said.
During the interception, the crew also used a remote-control system that allows operators to control the interceptor from any location worldwide, Ukrinform reported.

According to Militarnyi, tthe interceptor can reach speeds of up to 370 kilometers per hour, has a range of up to 30 kilometers, operates at altitudes of up to nine kilometers, and can remain airborne for up to 15 minutes. It carries a 500-gram warhead.
The interceptor can be equipped with daytime or nighttime cameras, as well as an AI module for automatic target detection, tracking, and lock-on. Its guidance system can detect targets at distances of up to one kilometer.
The Geran-5, meanwhile, is a Russian strike UAV with a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 850 kilograms and a cruising speed of 450 to 600 kilometers per hour, making it considerably faster than the Geran-3. According to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, the drone can remain airborne for around two hours and has a range of up to 950 kilometers.
The interception comes as Ukraine expands the use of specialized drones against Russia’s jet-powered UAVs. On September 28, the Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation reported that Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Brigade had received new interceptor drones designed to pursue and destroy Geran-5s.
According to the foundation, the brigade’s “Yastrub” crew used one of the newly supplied interceptors to shoot down a Geran-5 over Ukraine’s Chernihiv region.
