Russian Geran-5 Was Flying at 425 Km/h—Ukraine’s New Interceptor Drone Took It Down

Ukraine’s 1020th Anti-Aircraft Missile and Artillery Brigade has received new interceptor drones capable of pursuing and destroying Russia’s jet-powered Geran-5 attack UAVs, Serhiy Prytula Charity Foundation reported on September 28.

According to the foundation, a crew from the brigade known as “Yastrub” used one of the new interceptors to destroy a Geran-5 over the Chernihiv region of Ukraine.

The Russian drone was intercepted while traveling at a speed of 425 kilometers per hour and at an altitude of more than three kilometers.

“Jet-powered Geran-5 drones fly at high speeds and altitudes, making them difficult for conventional countermeasures to intercept,” the foundation added.

The Geran-5 is a Russian strike drone with a maximum takeoff weight of roughly 850 kilograms and a cruising speed of 450 to 600 kilometers per hour, significantly faster than the Geran-3. According to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, the UAV can remain airborne for about two hours and has a range of up to 950 kilometers.

The drone is capable of flying at altitudes of up to six kilometers, although documented combat deployments have so far involved altitudes between 200 meters and three kilometers.

Russia’s Fast Geran-5 Drone “Exploded Like a Comet” After Ukrainian Intercept, Video

The deployment of the new interceptors comes as Russia is reportedly introducing upgraded versions of the Geran-5. On September 27, Ukrainian Telegram channel Polkovnyk HSh reported that Russian forces had begun using a Geran-5 variant equipped with an optical navigation system that relies on stored terrain imagery to guide the drone along its route.

The new variant, designated Geran-5 K5, reportedly features a Digital Scene Matching Area Correlation electro-optical module. The system determines the drone’s position by comparing images of the terrain captured during flight with preloaded reference imagery, allowing it to navigate along a predetermined route.
