Ukraine Turns Soviet BTR-60 Into Remote-Controlled Attack Vehicle to Breach Russian Defenses

Ukrainian forces converted a Soviet-era BTR-60 armored personnel carrier into a remotely controlled attack vehicle and used it to destroy fortified Russian positions during offensive operations in eastern Ukraine.

According to Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps on September 28, the modified BTR-60 was deployed during fighting for the settlement of Nove on the Lyman axis as part of the Corps’ Vivaldi offensive operation.

The vehicle was equipped with a remote-control system and cameras that allowed an operator to steer it toward Russian positions without a crew on board. A reconnaissance drone followed the armored vehicle and helped adjust its route as it approached the target.

The 3rd Army Corps said the remotely operated BTR-60 was used against some of the most heavily fortified Russian positions in the area.

“They were used to blow up the enemy’s strongest fortifications,” 3rd Army Corps commander Andrii Biletskyi said.

The BTR-60 is a Soviet-designed eight-wheeled armored personnel carrier developed in the late 1950s. The platform entered serial production in 1960 and remained in production in different variants for decades.

Ukraine has also increasingly deployed smaller unmanned ground vehicles during offensive operations. During Operation Vivaldi, Ukrainian forces used ground robots equipped with grenade launchers to attack Russian positions without directly exposing infantry during the initial assault.

The 3rd Army Corps launched Operation Vivaldi in northern Donetsk region in September, combining infantry, drones, unmanned ground vehicles, and other systems during operations aimed at retaking territory from Russian forces.
