Ukraine’s Operation Vivaldi Debuts First-Ever Attack With Bomber Drones Deploying Ground Robots, Video

Ukraine’s Third Army Corps carried out what it described as the first-ever attack involving unmanned ground vehicles deployed by heavy bomber drones during Operation Vivaldi, the corps reported on September 24.

According to the corps, heavy bomber drones operated by the Third Assault Brigade deployed NC13 strike unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), known as “Gryphons,” more than 10 kilometers behind Russian lines.
The Third Army Corps said cameras mounted on the ground robots recorded the operation, which resulted in Russian soldiers being killed and wounded in an area where they had not expected such an attack.
The tactic was developed from scratch by soldiers of the NC13 strike UGV unit and implemented with support from the brigade’s unmanned aerial systems.
The “Gryphon” was named after Hryhorii Bach, an NC13 machine gunner with the call sign “Gryphon,” who went missing during fighting for Andriivka in 2023.
“Now, even more of our infantry soldiers’ lives can be saved, while more enemy personnel and resources are destroyed. And this is only the beginning of a new chapter in history, opened by the Third Army Corps!” the statement concluded.
On September 15, Third Army Corps Commander Andrii Biletskyi announced the launch of Operation Vivaldi, a Ukrainian counteroffensive in northern Donetsk region that cleared 75 square kilometers of Russian infiltration positions, restored control over several settlements, and inflicted significant losses on Russian forces.

“Our operation is called ‘Vivaldi,’ and Vivaldi, as we know, has four seasons. And this is only the first of them. […] There will be good news, but for now our actions require silence,” Biletskyi said.
The Third Army Corps has also reported extensive use of electronic warfare during the operation, saying its units disrupted more than 20,000 Russian drone missions during Operation Vivaldi.
