Ukraine Unveils New 110-Km Vilkha Guided Missile With 220-Kg Warhead

Ukraine’s Luch Design Bureau has developed a new guided missile for the Vilkha rocket system, with a stated range of up to 110 kilometers and a 220-kilogram warhead. The weapon is currently in the final stage of testing.

According to Militarnyi on September 9, the upgraded missile was presented at the MSPO 2026 defense exhibition in Poland. The new 300-mm missile is 7.6 meters long and has a total weight of 907 kilograms.

The missile is designed to strike ground targets and adjusts its trajectory toward predetermined coordinates throughout its flight. Its guidance system combines satellite navigation with an onboard inertial navigation system.

According to Oboronka on September 8, representatives of Luch described the missile, designated R-624MS, as a further development of the Vilkha-M project. The new version has a maximum stated range of 110 kilometers.

The missile can be used with Vilkha launchers carrying either 12 or eight rounds. Oboronka reported that these could include existing 300-mm Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems as well as a newer eight-round launcher.

The new missile also differs significantly from earlier Vilkha-family designs. The previously used belt of 90 small gas-dynamic thrusters, which helped alter the missile’s flight vector, is no longer visible on the new version.

Instead, the R-624MS features a redesigned tail section with a rotating aerodynamic control assembly. According to Militarnyi, the new configuration allows the missile body itself to remain stabilized during flight, unlike earlier versions in which the entire missile rotated around its longitudinal axis.

Oboronka suggested that keeping the main body stable while only the tail assembly rotates could improve the continuity of satellite navigation and potentially increase accuracy. Luch has not disclosed further technical details about the missile.

The R-624MS is one of several missile projects recently presented by the Ukrainian defense industry. LUCH has also developed a new air defense missile based on technology from its Stugna missile family.

The new Vilkha missile is part of a broader push by Ukraine to expand domestically produced missile systems. Luch has also developed the RK-19 surface-to-air missile, designed to replace Soviet-made 9M33-series interceptors used by the Osa-AKM short-range air defense system.
