EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the US Embassy was the only diplomatic mission to leave Kyiv after Russia threatened new strikes on the Ukrainian capital. Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, denied claims that the US Embassy was the only diplomatic mission to leave Kyiv after Russia threatened new strikes on the capital, saying the information “does not correspond to reality.”

The statement came in response to remarks by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

According to her, Russia has failed to achieve major territorial gains in Ukraine and is instead relying on terror attacks to spread fear among civilians and international partners.

She said that tactic had not worked before and would not work now, but suggested that US diplomats had responded to Moscow’s warnings by leaving the capital.

“From what we heard from Ukraine yesterday, all embassies stayed except one. So this also requires courage from those embassies [that stayed]. But yes, all Europeans stayed. America left,” Kallas said.

European diplomatic missions remain in Kyiv, she said.

The US Embassy has also refuted those claims, stating that “The US Embassy is open. There are no changes to our operations, and reports otherwise are false.”

Diplomats added that the State Department has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans and regularly reviews the security posture of Embassy Kyiv.

The remarks came after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a phone call that Russia’s armed forces were beginning “systematic strikes” on facilities in Kyiv that Moscow claims are used for the needs of Ukraine’s Armed Forces.

According to Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Lavrov made the statement on the instructions of the Russian leader.

The ministry also said Lavrov reminded the US side of agreements allegedly reached at the highest level in Anchorage regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Kallas framed Russia’s threats as part of a broader attempt to compensate for its lack of battlefield progress by targeting Ukrainian cities and trying to create panic.

Earlier, the Russian State Duma  Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin threatened a nuclear strike if SpaceX continues to provide Ukraine with Starlink satellite internet access.
