Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has accused the West of actively preparing a physical military strike against Russia, The Moscow Times reported on May 22.

He claimed that a united Europe is attempting to exterminate Russian civilization under the guise of revanchism.

The allegations were made across a series of public appearances where the top diplomat repeatedly framed Western support for Ukraine as a continuation of World War II-era fascism, The Moscow Times wrote.

Speaking in an interview with the youth-oriented propaganda outlet “Children’s Editorial Board,” Lavrov claimed that Western powers are forming a coalition to destroy the country.

“Now, under the same flags of Nazism and revanchism, a pan-European group is being created to attack Russia not only by hybrid methods, but they are also thinking about a physical attack,” Lavrov stated. “And at the head of this group is not Adolf Hitler—he is simply no longer around—but [Ukrainian President] Volodymyr Zelenskyy with his Nazi slogans.”

The Foreign Minister expanded on these claims during a meeting of the United Russia General Council’s commission on international cooperation, placing the blame for the Russian war against Ukraine squarely on Western elites, whom he described as globalists, The Moscow Times reports.

“It is they, these globalists, who bear the main responsibility for the fact that the meaning of the existence of the current Ukrainian government has become the extermination of everything connected with Russia,” Lavrov said. “The West generously pays for and encourages this Nazi policy, insisting that Ukraine continue this unacceptable line.”

The Moscow Times reports that Lavrov further argued that the root of the war lies in Europe and Washington’s historical inability to accept Russia as an independent global power.

Addressing a socio-political hearing on Eurasian security, he aligned Moscow’s struggles with those of China, Iran, Belarus, and North Korea—states he claimed are merely trying to pursue independent policies despite Western interference.

“Just like 200, just like 100 years ago, the West cannot come to terms with the very fact of Russia’s existence as an independent entity representing a civilizational alternative,” he said, according to The Moscow Times.

The Russian diplomat also targeted Berlin, pointing to statements made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding the rebuilding of Germany’s armed forces.

“The fact that Chancellor Friedrich Merz declares that Germany ‘must once again become the leading military power in Europe’ is a task for a long historical perspective,” Lavrov said. “It would seem that all international legal measures were taken, but the ideology of Nazism and the practice of Nazism are being revived,” The Moscow Times reported.

These statements follow stalled diplomatic progress between Russia and the US. Lavrov had recently accused the United States of continuing the “hostile policies” of the previous administration. He stated that despite ongoing dialogue with US President Donald Trump, Washington has maintained economic pressure and introduced new sanctions against Russian oil giants like Lukoil and Rosneft.

While the Kremlin continues to seek diplomatic concessions, Ukrainian and Western officials frequently point to Moscow’s history of violating nearly 200 international agreements—including the 1994 Budapest Memorandum—arguing that Russia uses diplomatic negotiations as tactical delays to prepare for further military action.
