Ukraine’s Partners Speed Up F16 Maintenance to Keep Fighter Jets Flying

International defense industry partners have reduced servicing times and accelerated maintenance for Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jets following intensive operational use.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Heorhii Tykhyi confirmed the development, noting that technical support partners are transferring overhauled aircraft at an increasing pace.

“Our industrial technical support partners are not only continuing to return aircraft after major overhauls, but are doing so faster and faster. Turnaround times are being shortened rather than prolonged,” Tykhyi stated.
Ukraine operates its F-16 fleet intensively and under demanding conditions. We have always recognized that sustaining these aircraft would be challenging, particularly because certain components for this early F-16 variant are no longer in production and are becoming increasingly…

Maintenance challenges stem partly from sourcing difficulties for older F-16 variants, as several required components are no longer produced.
“However, recent reports claiming a catastrophically low level of readiness and excessively long maintenance timelines are simply untrue,” Tykhyi added.

Russia significantly intensified its aerial strikes against Ukraine during September by launching 3,177 jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles compared to the 2,850 recorded in August, according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat.
He noted that Russian forces conducted continuous daily waves of air raids targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region as primary focal points, while also hitting major urban centers such as Kharkiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kherson, and Dnipro, as well as several western locations.
To counter these persistent air threats, Ukrainian defense operations relied on a combination of tactical aviation—including F-16 fighter jets—ground-based air defense systems, interceptor missiles for Patriot units, and mobile MANPADS, while emphasizing the urgent need for long-term partner support and scalable domestic production.
