Ukrainian F-16 Crashes During Combat Mission, Pilot Ejects Safely

On July 29, the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost contact with an F-16 fighter jet on one of the frontline directions.

The Ukrainian Air Force stated: "In one of the frontline directions, the pilot was performing a combat mission to intercept enemy air targets. According to preliminary data, an emergency situation occurred on board the aircraft, and the pilot was forced to eject."

Following the ejection, the pilot was evacuated and taken to a medical facility for examination, with officials confirming his life is not in danger.

Experts and law enforcement officers are working at the crash site. The Air Force noted that there were no civilian casualties or damage on the ground, and the precise causes of the incident are being investigated.

The event comes shortly after General Dan Caine, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, stated on July 22 that a Ukrainian F-16 had shot down a Russian fighter jet in aerial combat for the first time.

Ukraine has previously lost several F-16s during the war. In August 2024, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported the crash of an F-16 during a Russian missile attack, which resulted in the death of pilot Oleksiy Mes.

In May 2025, another F-16 was lost while repelling a Russian air attack when the pilot encountered an emergency onboard, maneuvered the aircraft away from populated areas, and successfully ejected.

This loss comes at a critical moment for Ukraine, as the country faces ongoing aerial attacks while grappling with a severe shortage of air defense capabilities, including PAC-3 interceptor missiles.

Previously, Ukraine was preparing to equip its F-16 fighter jets with German-made IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missiles, in addition to its existing arsenal of missiles.
