Ukrainian troops in the Sumy region recovered an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) damaged by a mine with the unexpected assistance of a local woman who stopped while passing the area on a bicycle, Ukraine’s 71st Separate Airmobile Brigade reported.
According to the brigade, the UGV hit a mine while carrying out a combat mission, leaving troops at risk of losing the vehicle.

The soldiers deployed another unmanned ground vehicle to retrieve the damaged system but were unable to remotely secure it for recovery.
A woman passing by on a bicycle then approached the vehicles and helped guide the operators, who were controlling the UGVs remotely. With her assistance, the damaged robot was successfully recovered and returned to the unit’s base.
“We are sincerely grateful to this woman for her courage and willingness to help. But most of all, we want her to be safe,” the brigade said.
The recovery comes as Ukrainian forces continue to expand their use of ground robotic systems for frontline operations. The number of UGV missions has more than tripled since the beginning of 2026, with the systems carrying out more than 25,000 logistics and evacuation missions in August alone.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense reported on September 7, citing data from the DELTA battlefield management system, that UGV use had increased 3.3-fold since the start of the year.
By early September, DELTA had recorded approximately 112,000 logistics and evacuation missions involving ground robotic systems since the beginning of 2026.
