What Ukraine’s Strike on Molniya Drone Plant Reveals About Russian Defenses

Ukrainian drones destroyed three production and storage buildings at Russia's Atlant-Aero drone plant in Taganrog overnight on September 12, marking the manufacturer's second major loss since April.
Satellite imagery published to the "Absolutely Reliable Source" Telegram channel documented the damage in Taganrog, in Russia's Rostov region. The channel's analysis identified the main strike site as Atlant-Aero's primary production facility, which builds the Molniya line of strike-reconnaissance drones.

According to that imagery, further production and storage buildings were destroyed at a second location in the city, reportedly used by the same company. Satellite fire monitoring and local reports indicated blazes across multiple industrial sites. The confirmed and suspected results included:
Three production and storage buildings were destroyed at Atlant-Aero's main site;
additional production and storage buildings destroyed at a second Atlant-Aero location;
prolonged fires at fuel tanks on the grounds of the Taganrog-Central military airfield;
fires at no fewer than four industrial facilities, including the Taganrog Automobile Plant.
The Taganrog-Central airfield, home to Russia's 708th Military Transport Aviation Regiment, was a separate target. Fuel tanks there burned for hours after the strike.
Satellite imagery also showed scorched vegetation beside a Russian S-400 air-defense position. The traces may indicate an attempt to hit the system, though its destruction remains unconfirmed.
Atlant-Aero runs the full development, production, and testing cycle for the Molniya family of drones. The line includes the Molniya-1 and Molniya-2 strike variants, as well as the Molniya-2R reconnaissance model.
The company also produces components for other Russian unmanned systems, making it a node in Moscow's drone-manufacturing network.
Taganrog's military-industrial sites have drawn repeated Ukrainian strikes in recent weeks. Earlier, drones hit a Russian military airfield in the city overnight on September 6-7, with satellite monitoring recording a fire in the aircraft parking area at around 2:44 am.
That facility, roughly 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, hosts the 325th Aircraft Repair Plant and sits beside the Beriev complex that maintains Russia's scarce A-50U early-warning aircraft.
