Adults Attack Ukrainian Children in Polish Park After Hearing Them Speak Ukrainian

A man and a woman in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz targeted two underage Ukrainians in a physical and verbal assault on August 14 because they were speaking Ukrainian to each other, according to the Consulate General of Ukraine in Gdansk.
The incident involved a 14-year-old girl and her 12-year-old brother in a park near the local railway station.

The adults hurled profanities and violent threats before physically assaulting the children. The Consulate General of Ukraine in Gdansk stated that the attackers twisted one child's arm, broke a toy drone, and threw the debris at the boy, causing scratches.
While the physical health of the brother and sister is not threatened, diplomatic officials noted they experienced severe emotional distress.
Ukrainian diplomats are maintaining constant contact with the mother of the children, and a report has been submitted to the local police, who are actively searching for the suspects involved in the incident.

The assault comes amid a broader rise in physical attacks targeting Ukrainians in Poland. Since the beginning of 2026, Ukrainians in the country have filed at least 180 reports of hate-motivated crimes committed against them, marking a 30% increase compared to the previous year.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that "hooligans are becoming bolder because they have received political support," and called on President Karol Nawrocki to publicly condemn the rising violence.
In response to the trend, large-scale protests under the slogan "Don't Be Indifferent" took place across 22 Polish cities against attacks on Ukrainians and other ethnic minorities.

On May 7 in the Old Town area of Olsztyn, a group of adults physically assaulted a 14-year-old Ukrainian boy, hurled insults based on his nationality, and issued death threats after he intervened to defend his 12-year-old brother, who had been insulted and shoved by a group of local girls.
The attackers forced the teenager to kneel, threatened to kill him if they met again, and caused injuries that required two days of hospital treatment before police identified the suspects using video evidence and witness testimony.
