Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of US President Donald Trump, spent several days hunting in Mongolia in late August with Kremlin-linked Russian businessman Umar Kremlev, the Financial Times (FT) reported on October 27.

The FT reconstructed the trip using testimony from local guides and officials, flight data, social media posts, and public records.

According to the newspaper, Kremlev flew by charter aircraft from Kazakhstan to Ulaanbaatar before traveling to Trump Jr.’s hunting camp in western Mongolia.

Russian businessman Arthur Martirosov, a partner in the US-sanctioned venture fund Voskhod, traveled with Kremlev. The FT reported that Trump Jr. and Kremlev spent two days together before Kremlev returned to Ulaanbaatar.

One local participant in the trip told the FT that Trump Jr. and Kremlev were careful not to be photographed together while staying at the camp.

A spokesperson for Trump Jr. described the relationship as personal rather than commercial, explaining that the two men were introduced through a mutual acquaintance in the hunting community.

“Don has made clear that he has a personal friendship, not a business relationship, with Umar,” the spokesperson stated. “Their friendship is largely based on their shared love for hunting, fishing and the outdoors.”

“It shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone that they went hunting together earlier this year,” the spokesperson added.

The FT also cited counterintelligence concerns surrounding contacts between members of the US president’s family and people with links to Russian authorities.

“It really doesn’t matter if people have the most above board intentions,” Holden Triplette, a former director of counterintelligence on the US National Security Council during Trump’s first term, told the newspaper.

“The moment the Russian security and intelligence services figure out someone has a relationship with anyone of high value, they will try to weaponise that,” he added.

During the Mongolia trip, Trump Jr. also hunted a rare Altai argali, an endangered wild sheep, and met Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh, according to the FT.

Kremlev, 43, is president of the International Boxing Association and previously headed the Russian Boxing Federation from 2017.

The Mongolia trip was not the first reported instance of Kremlev providing significant personal support to Trump Jr. In September, UNITED24 Media reported that Kremlev had allegedly helped finance Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas, including the rental of a private island and a fireworks display.
