Russia’s internet segment suffered widespread outages on October 8, hours after a retaliatory Ukrainian drone strike hit a Yandex data center in the Ryazan region.

The Moscow Times reported that disruptions began around 4 p.m., citing Russian outage-monitoring services Sboy.rf and Downdetector. Problems affected banks, retailers, mobile operators, transportation services, streaming platforms, Google, YouTube, RuTube, and several major Russian websites.

Avito recorded the largest number of complaints, with more than 14,000 reports during the day. The most serious disruptions were reported in Moscow and St. Petersburg, where users also experienced problems with T-Bank, internet provider SkyNet, and the Mango Office cloud service.

The outages followed an overnight drone attack on a Yandex data center in Sasovo, Ryazan region. The Moscow Times reported that a fire broke out at the facility, while users experienced problems accessing Yandex Disk, Yandex Documents, and other company services.

The disruption also affected online bus-ticket sales in the Moscow region. MosTransAvto linked the problem to the suspension of a data center supporting its online ticketing system and estimated that restoration could take up to 24 hours.

Several major Russian media websites, including RBC, RIA Novosti, Kommersant, Vedomosti, Interfax, and Vesti, also experienced access problems. Some remained unavailable even through VPN connections.

Russian Railways acknowledged that "some users" could encounter difficulties accessing its website because of the operation of "external services," while its passenger application remained functional.

The incident followed reports that the Sasovo facility had suspended operations after the drone strike. Yandex could not immediately confirm whether the damaged data center could be fully restored. The site reportedly housed two of the company’s three supercomputers, making it an important part of Yandex’s computing infrastructure.

Earlier on October 8, it was reported that Yandex had blurred all four of its Cloud  data centers on its mapping service, including the facility struck by drones in the Ryazan region.

The concealed sites are located in Mytishchi, Sasovo, Kaluga, and Vladimir. The Sasovo facility, with an electrical capacity of up to 12 megawatts, shares an industrial site with the Sasta machine-tool plant. The plant was also struck overnight and is reportedly linked to supply chains supporting Russia’s Iskander ballistic missile production.
