A major fire broke out at the Central Research Institute of Machine Building (TsNIIMash), the primary analytical center for Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos, in the Moscow suburb of Korolev, the independent Russian news outlet IStories reported on August 5.

Local firefighting crews requested emergency assistance from Moscow’s Ministry of Emergency Situations to contain the blaze, IStories wrote.

While Russian state media claimed the incident may have been technical in nature, the fire coincided with temporary flight restrictions imposed by aviation authority Rosaviatsia at Moscow’s Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky airports—a security measure routinely enacted during incoming drone attacks.

TsNIIMash serves as a critical technological hub for Russia’s aerospace and military sector, hosting the country’s central Mission Control Center, overseeing the GLONASS satellite navigation system, and managing rocket technology research.

Due to its role in supporting Moscow’s military operations, the institute has been under comprehensive sanctions from the United States, the European Union, Canada, and other international partners since 2022, IStories noted.

The incident at TsNIIMash follows a pattern of strikes and fires targeting key military-industrial research centers across the Moscow region. An overnight drone raid recently ignited a fire at the Rostec-owned Central Research Institute of Precision Engineering (TsNIITochMash) in Podolsk, a facility responsible for developing specialized transport containers for guided artillery shells and small arms for Russian Spetsnaz units.
