Four NATO Countries Are Quietly Building Their Own Drone Forces, Ukraine’s Madyar Says

Four NATO countries are already designing dedicated unmanned systems forces modeled around the growing role of drones in modern warfare, but none has publicly announced the work yet, according to Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, in an interview with The Telegraph published on September 27.

Brovdi revealed the effort, saying several allied militaries are quietly working on the organizational architecture needed to create specialized drone branches of their own.
“I’ll give you some inside information from within NATO countries. Four countries are already working on the architecture and creation of Unmanned Systems Forces in their own countries. None of them is making it public,” Brovdi said.
Ukraine established its Unmanned Systems Forces as a separate military branch after drones became increasingly central to reconnaissance, strikes, logistics and other battlefield missions during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
Brovdi said he supports NATO countries keeping similar projects out of the public eye until the structures are actually ready.
“That is the right move. First do it, then talk about it,” he said.
He contrasted that approach with public announcements that can arrive before a new military structure is fully established, leaving projects vulnerable to political changes or pressure.
Brovdi recalled that Ukrainian drone troops applauded when the previous British government announced plans to establish dedicated unmanned forces.
At the same time, he warned partners against making major announcements too early if political circumstances could later derail or reshape the initiative.
Previously, reports emerged that Russia is reportedly offering $20 million through post-Soviet criminal networks for information revealing the whereabouts of Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces.
