Homemade Rockets Reportedly Hit One of Germany's Largest Power Plants in Sabotage Attempt

German authorities reported an attempt to attack energy infrastructure after discovering homemade explosive and incendiary devices near an electrical substation in Turnow-Preilack, located near the Jänschwalde lignite-fired power plant in Brandenburg.
The German newspaper Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung reported on September 1, obtaining a photograph showing what appeared to be an improvised device resembles a small homemade model rocket at the site.

Several improvised devices were found near the site in the Spree-Neisse district, and bomb disposal specialists were deployed to neutralize them.
The targeted substation distributes electricity generated by the 2,000-megawatt Jänschwalde facility—Germany's fourth-largest power station, which includes one 500-megawatt unit kept in reserve.
The plant supplies power to several million households and provides district heating to the city of Cottbus, with the affected substation situated about 5 kilometers away from the main facility.
German media indicated the apparent goal of the action was reportedly to cause a large-scale power outage linked to the nearby coal plant. Police noted that potential damage to a power line was recorded around 8 a.m., though initial reports confirmed no major blackouts occurred.
Brandenburg Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke referred to the event as a "trial attack." He stated, "The alarmingly high frequency of such incidents shows that we must decisively protect our infrastructure."
Woidke added that emergency services and personnel at the substation and power station prevented worse outcomes through timely actions, noting that no injuries were reported.
The event follows a series of sabotage incidents recorded across several European nations since early August. On August 4, an attack attempt targeting a Ukrainian An-124 cargo aircraft occurred at Leipzig airport using multiple drones, one of which struck a DHL company plane, though none detonated.
Earlier, a deliberate arson attack on a cable bridge connected to the Lichterfelde power station in Berlin damaged five high-voltage and ten medium-voltage power lines, leaving over 35,000 households and nearly 2,000 businesses without electricity and central heating across four districts.
A far-left extremist group known as Vulkangruppe claimed responsibility for the sabotage, prompting law enforcement to open a formal investigation while emergency crews worked to deploy temporary mobile infrastructure and restore full power to the affected areas.
