Norway’s Kongsberg to Make Anti-Drone Cannon Turrets in Poland From 2028

Norwegian defense manufacturer Kongsberg is preparing to build a production facility for anti-drone hardware in Poland to support the domestic SAN air defense network.
The agreement is expected to be signed by the end of the year, with construction starting immediately afterward, Defense Express reported on October 14.

Integrating production facilities within Poland aims to streamline supply chains for the country's national defense architecture. The plant will produce Kongsberg PROTECTOR weapon stations equipped with 30mm cannons, which serve as core modules for the SAN counter-drone system.
Establishing localized manufacturing addresses prior concerns regarding reliance on external components, helping to ensure greater domestic control over military hardware while creating economic value within the country.

The SAN air defense network relies on a combination of defensive platforms. Alongside 30mm cannon turrets, the network incorporates 12.7mm machine gun mounts, self-propelled 35mm SA-35 anti-aircraft systems, electronic warfare units, APKWS precision rockets, and Merops interceptor drones. These capabilities are configured onto Legwan all-terrain vehicles and Jelcz heavy trucks, as reported by Defense Express.
Polish armed forces have ordered 18 batteries of the system, comprising 18 command platoons and 52 firing platoons to expand protection against unmanned aerial threats. Neighboring Slovakia has also indicated interest in the platform through regional defense cooperation frameworks.
Cannon and machine gun turrets offer a cost-effective countermeasure compared to traditional surface-to-air missiles, despite functional constraints regarding operational ceiling and maximum engagement range.

Previously, Poland signed a major defense contract valued at approximately $4.2 billion with a consortium of PGZ and Kongsberg to acquire the SAN anti-drone system.
The contract, which was scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028, included 18 batteries, 18 command platoons, and 52 fire platoons capable of autonomously detecting, classifying, and neutralizing drones.
