Poland Builds Border Fortifications After Russian Drone Strikes 2 km From Its Territory

Polish military engineers are constructing fortified security posts near border crossings with Ukraine following recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure close to the Polish border.
The announcement was made by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on X on September 15.

According to Poland’s Armed Forces General Command, engineers from the 4th and 18th regiments are building observation and security positions near the border crossings at Dorohusk, Medyka, and Korczowa.
The fortifications are being constructed using HESCO barriers, collapsible wire-mesh containers that can be filled with sand or soil to provide protection.
The measures come after a Russian attack reached infrastructure just kilometers from Polish territory. On September 13, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train in Ukraine’s Volyn region, roughly two kilometers from the Polish border.
Ukraine’s state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia reported that no one was injured, adding that its monitoring team had warned the train crew of the threat in advance.
The same Russian attack also damaged infrastructure near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk international border crossing, a key transport route connecting Ukraine and Poland.

The strike near Poland came just days after another Russian attack targeted a Ukrainian border crossing with Moldova. Overnight on September 9, Russian forces struck the Starokozache border crossing in Odesa region, killing two civilians and injuring three others.
Odesa Regional Military Administration head Oleh Kiper reported that the two people killed were civilians who were near the checkpoint when the strike occurred. The attack also damaged infrastructure at the crossing and in the surrounding area.
In the aftermath of the strike, emergency crews evacuated another 16 people by bus to a safer location.
