Russian leader Vladimir Putin hosted Mohsen Rezaei, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, for a face-to-face meeting at the Kremlin on November 5, as reported by Interfax.

The visit follows a phone call between Putin and Rezaei on November 2. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the two “discussed by phone the current situation in the region and the world, with a particular focus on West Asia.”

Both officials reiterated the importance of advancing the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran in line with the action plan established by the leadership of both nations.

The visit also takes place just days before scheduled trilateral talks involving the United States, Ukraine, and Russia in Abu Dhabi.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on October 28 that the leaders of Finland and Norway conveyed Kyiv’s position to Putin ahead of planned trilateral negotiations.

He explained that he held a conversation with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre to coordinate the negotiating agenda before their call with Putin.

The two Nordic leaders contacted Zelenskyy immediately after their conversation with Putin and briefed him on the Russian position.

Earlier diplomatic negotiations over the past year failed to produce any significant breakthroughs or long-term agreements. Instead, previous attempts at peace talks ended in stalemate, with Russian forces escalating their air strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure shortly after negotiations stalled.
