Russia is expanding surveillance of schoolchildren through cameras, online education platforms, and social media monitoring, Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation reported in a statement on October 8.

According to the Center, Russian authorities are collecting information on students under the stated justification of improving security.

Teachers are being required to monitor students’ likes and comments on social media, while surveillance cameras in schools are set to be connected directly to terminals operated by Russia’s FSB, Interior Ministry, and National Guard, the Center reported.

The collected information includes data on children’s views, health, and families, which is then compiled into digital profiles and made available to Russian security agencies.

“The Russian totalitarian machine seeks to control every citizen, starting from childhood. Educational institutions are effectively being turned into branches of the security services,” the Center stated.

Russia’s surveillance of children also comes amid reports of Ukrainian minors being removed from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories and taken to Russia.

In September, Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service reported that children from an orphanage in temporarily occupied Donetsk had been taken to Russia under the pretext of a “recreation” program, with some later placed under guardianship in the Moscow region.
