Russia Identifies US Missile Sites in Norway It Would Target in a Military Conflict

Russia has identified US missile deployment sites and their command-and-control centers in Norway as potential targets in the event of a military conflict, following Washington’s reported deployment of a missile system capable of launching Tomahawk cruise missiles.

According to Reuters on September 7, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow would pay “particular attention” to locations associated with the US missile systems, warning that the deployment had further undermined prospects for strategic stability talks between Russia and the United States.
The Russian Foreign Ministry specifically pointed to a US missile system based on Mk-41 launchers deployed in Norway. The launchers can accommodate different types of missiles, including Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Moscow claimed that missiles launched from Norway could reach a significant portion of European Russia, including Moscow. Reuters reported that US media had indicated Washington delivered the new missile launch system to Norway in August.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said the deployment sites and command-and-control centers associated with the US systems “would become targets in the event of a military conflict.”
The ministry also argued that the deployment of US ground-based intermediate-range missile systems in Europe had effectively eliminated conditions for renewed discussions with Washington on strategic nuclear stability.
“Steps such as the deployment in Europe of US ground-based intermediate range missiles that pose a threat to the Russian Federation ‘reset to zero’—to put it mildly—the conditions for constructive dialogue with the US on strategic issues,” the ministry said, according to Reuters.
Moscow linked the Norwegian deployment to the broader breakdown in arms-control dialogue between Russia and the United States. The Russian Foreign Ministry said strategic stability talks had been curtailed under the previous US administration and described the current administration’s plans for multilateral negotiations involving China as “unrealistic.”
Earlier, a pro-Russian hacker group known as Server Killers declared “cyberwar” on Norway and claimed responsibility for DDoS attacks targeting government digital services, saying the campaign was launched in response to Oslo’s military and financial support for Ukraine.
