Russian Lawmaker Says Moscow Should End Ukraine War by 2030 to Prepare for NATO Confrontation

A Russian lawmaker has said Moscow should complete its war against Ukraine by 2030 to prepare for what he described as a potential future confrontation with NATO, The Moscow Times reported, citing Gazeta.Ru on August 24.

Viktor Sobolev, a member of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee and former commander of Russia’s 58th Combined Arms Army, said Russia’s war against Ukraine should end in a Russian military victory before NATO countries are, in his view, prepared for a possible conflict with Moscow.
“We need to deal with the fascist regime before Poland and other NATO countries are ready for war with Russia. The Poles, Germans, French, British, Belgium, Norway, Finland, Sweden—they all want to fight Russia and inflict a strategic defeat on it,” Sobolev said.
According to the lawmaker, Russia’s so-called “special military operation” should be fully concluded by 2030 with a victory for the Russian Armed Forces.
Sobolev, however, expressed skepticism that Russia’s war could end in the near term. In late July, he said he saw no conditions for the hostilities to conclude in 2026.
“There are no prerequisites for ending the war in 2026,” Sobolev said at the time.
His remarks come as Ukraine continues to reject territorial concessions as a means of ending the war. In an Independence Day address on August 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would neither surrender its territory to Russia nor ease the heavy military cost Moscow is paying for its invasion.
Zelenskyy also dismissed suggestions that ceding the Donbas could bring the war to a swift end, arguing that the Kremlin continues to underestimate Ukraine’s determination and ability to resist.
“Putin is stuck in the past. He still looks at an old-style Ukraine—one that will stay silent, swallow it, endure it,” Zelenskyy said.
