Most Poles do not expect Russia’s war in Ukraine to end in 2026, with 59.6% saying they do not believe the fighting will conclude this year, according to Rzeczpospolita on January 2.

The IBRiS survey for the Polish daily found 21.6% of respondents believed the war would end in 2026, while 18.9% were undecided.

Among those who did not expect an end to the war, skeptics included supporters of the governing camp and, at a slightly lower level, supporters of the opposition, as well as men, younger respondents, and people in their forties, Rzeczpospolita added.

Retired Polish generals Stanisław Koziej and Roman Polko told the newspaper the results reflected realism and distrust of Moscow’s statements.

Polko said Poles “can assess the situation realistically,” adding that the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, had not honored past agreements and would sign deals without adhering to them, according to the report.

Earlier, Poland and Ukraine formally announced a defense partnership to expand joint weapons production, enhance training programmes, and intensify coordination on air defense and drone warfare.
