“The War Must End. And It Must End Honestly.”—Zelenskyy to Trump After US Envoy’s Moscow Visit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on August 6 that he held a conversation with US President Donald Trump, following a recent visit to Moscow by Trump’s personal envoy, Stephen Witkoff. The call took place while Zelenskyy was returning from a frontline visit to Ukrainian brigades in Sumy region on August 6.
“This conversation followed the visit of President Trump’s representative Stephen Witkoff to Moscow,” Zelenskyy said in an official statement published on his Telegram channel.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s stance, aligned with that of its Western partners, remains unchanged: “The war must end. And it must end honestly.”
The Ukrainian president also noted that European leaders participated in the call. “I am grateful to each of them for their support,” Zelenskyy stated. He added that the conversation addressed the issues raised in Moscow during Witkoff’s visit.
“Ukraine will definitely defend its independence,” Zelenskyy affirmed. “We all need a lasting and reliable peace. Russia must end the war it started.”
Earlier, coverage noted that Stephen Witkoff had engaged with both Russian and Ukrainian officials, including meeting Russian leader Putin and Ukraine’s leadership.
Witkoff framed his role as needing to talk to “everybody” to mediate or craft political solutions.
