Roughly an hour earlier, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command announced that military aircraft had been scrambled in response to Russia’s attack on Ukraine—a standard precaution during large-scale strikes near NATO territory.
“These actions are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing and protecting the airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to threatened zones,” the command said.
During Russia’s overnight missile attack, a Russian cruise missile flew deep into Poland leaving a large crater near Tarnawa-Kolonia and Tokary villages in Lublin Voivodeship.

The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, confirmed that a Russian Kh-101 missile entered Polish airspace during a nighttime attack on Ukraine.
“This is yet another clear demonstration that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense now is urgent and serves as a guarantee for the protection of the entire Euro-Atlantic community,” he wrote.
Strategic Aviation placed the missile over the Lublin region, which borders Ukraine’s Volyn region.

At approximately 5:58 am Kyiv time, Polish outlet Lublin112 reported a powerful explosion that woke residents of the village of Targowisko.
Emergency crews, police, and a military helicopter were dispatched to the area. A crater was later discovered in a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Biłgoraj County, about 95 kilometers—or 59 miles—from the Ukrainian border.

Air raid warnings had been issued for Lublin and other cities in the region at around 3:50 am. The alert reportedly remained active for more than 90 minutes.
Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command later said an unidentified aerial target approached within five kilometers of the Polish border at around 3:29 am local time.
At 3:40 am, Polish systems detected it traveling west over the country. An on-duty F-16 was sent to identify and intercept the object, but it disappeared from radar six minutes later.

Earlier in 2025, 19 Russian drones crossed into Polish airspace overnight, with many entering from Belarus. Photos of Russian Gerbera drones recovered in Poland reveal modifications that contradict Moscow’s claims about their limited range.
Gerberas found on Polish territory were equipped with additional fuel tanks in the nose section, extending their endurance beyond the standard 700 kilometers.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk had warned that the coming months could prove critical for regional security amid growing concerns over the possibility of a Russian provocation aimed at testing NATO's resolve.
