UK to Supply Patriot Missiles in $135.1M Winter Air Defense Package for Ukraine

The United Kingdom has committed £100 million ($135.1 million) to a new winter air defense package for Ukraine, which includes Patriot missiles, according to a press release published by the UK Ministry of Defence on September 8.

Through a contribution to NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) , the UK will supply air defense interceptors, large-caliber artillery rounds, and drones. The equipment will be delivered before winter to help protect Ukraine’s critical national infrastructure, civilian population, and armed forces from Russian attacks, the Ministry of Defence reported.

The air defense package follows recent visits by the British Prime Minister and Defence Secretary to Kyiv, where they discussed the necessity of additional support ahead of winter with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Both the Prime Minister and I heard loud and clear on our first visits to Kyiv the importance of supporting Ukraine through this winter, as Putin prepares to use winter as a weapon by continuing barbaric attacks against civilian and energy targets,” UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said.

“We promised to mobilise allies and provide more support wherever we can. Today, we are delivering on that, strengthening Ukraine’s defences and, alongside 50 allies, converting commitment into capability,” he continued.

Streeting added: “We will stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine until they win. Ukraine’s frontline is the frontline for freedom everywhere and our support will not waver.”

Britain is also continuing its commitment to provide over 120,000 drones to Ukraine this year, with 25,000 delivered to date and shipments set to increase ahead of winter. The deliveries include interceptors to counter Russian drones, reconnaissance drones, and attack drones, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Additionally, the UK recently reached a milestone by delivering its millionth round of large-caliber artillery ammunition to Ukraine. Building on this, the UK—alongside Germany, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden—is funding the procurement of tens of thousands of long-range artillery rounds to be delivered in the coming months.

The new package builds on previous bilateral initiatives, including authorization for defense firm MBDA to release classified information on UK components for the SCALP (Storm Shadow) long-range missile to establish local assembly lines in Ukraine. The UK and Ukraine also recently signed a landmark AI agreement to develop new military capabilities.

The announcement coincided with the 36th meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group. The meeting, co-chaired by Streeting and German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, brings together nearly 50 nations to address Ukraine’s urgent battlefield requirements and sustain long-term military support, according to the press release.

The £100 million winter package follows a separate British initiative to expand Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham had previously announced a technology transfer agreement that will allow Ukraine to domestically produce Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

British and French defense companies will participate in establishing local manufacturing for the air-launched precision weapons, which France operates as the SCALP-EG. The localized production is intended to reduce Ukraine’s reliance on Western stockpiles and enable independent strikes against Russian supply chains and high-value military targets.
