Tensions between Ukraine and the US over President Donald Trump’s diesel agreement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin have escalated into the most severe strain in bilateral relations since last year’s Oval Office controversy.
An unnamed US official stated that Trump reacted with intense anger toward Ukraine, making it difficult to predict what subsequent steps might follow, according to The New York Times.
Reports indicate that Witkoff and Kushner have suspended their travel plans to Russia until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy “improves relations with Trump.”

In September 2026, US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner held a three-hour meeting in Moscow with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which ended without a breakthrough as Putin remained committed to capturing the entire Donetsk region.
Bloomberg reported that Putin believed his forces could capture the area within six months, though calculations by the Institute for the Study of War estimated it would take until October 2032 at their current rate of advance.
Following the talks, Witkoff traveled to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European national security advisers, reporting “substantial progress” from those discussions. The diplomatic mission was preceded by an unannounced visit to Moscow by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who presented Russian intelligence leadership with a grim assessment of the Russian military's battlefield situation and economy.
