Zelenskyy and Trump Hold Oval Office Talks, Focusing on Air Defense and Peace Diplomacy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office to discuss production licenses for Patriot air defense interceptors and strategies to intensify diplomatic efforts toward ending the war, Zelenskyy reported on July 28.

Describing the session as a “good meeting,” Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the United States for its steadfast support and joint initiatives aimed at protecting Ukrainian lives and securing peace.

Before diving into defense and diplomatic priorities, the Ukrainian leader formally conveyed his condolences to Trump regarding the passing of Senator Lindsey Graham, whom Zelenskyy praised as “a true friend of Ukraine”.

The high-level talks focused heavily on expanding Ukraine’s defense manufacturing capabilities, particularly concerning advanced air defense systems necessary to protect population centers and critical infrastructure. “We discussed with the President licenses for the production of interceptors for Patriots and several other ideas that could help,” Zelenskyy stated.

Ukrainian President added that bilateral teams from Ukraine and the United States will coordinate details for their continued communication, reiterating his appreciation for America’s enduring support.

Donald Trump had recently backed the sanctions package as a tribute to the late Senator Lindsey Graham, clearing a major hurdle for the legislation as all 100 US senators have been invited to an all-hands meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the US Capitol.
