Ukrainian defense manufacturer TAF Industries has launched a new version of its Kolibri 10” FPV drone equipped with AURA AI, an artificial-intelligence targeting system.

This system is capable of detecting, identifying, locking onto, and tracking targets even when GPS or communications are disrupted, RBC-Ukraine reported on October 28.

The new Kolibri 10” Advance uses an AURA AI module developed by DOD Solution. The system can identify both moving and stationary targets and assist the operator throughout the attack.

Once the AI detects and locks onto a target, the pilot confirms the engagement. AURA AI can then continue tracking the target and handle the terminal guidance itself.

That reduces the pilot’s workload and allows the drone to continue its mission in environments where GPS is unavailable, electronic warfare is active, or the communications link becomes weak or disappears entirely.

“The automatic terminal-guidance module from DOD Solution recognizes targets, increasing the drone’s level of autonomy using AI. This function primarily helps pilots see all potential threats and targets by outlining them with a rectangle. Essentially, the AI module highlights targets the pilot might have missed,” said Andrii Atamanenko, Product Owner for FPV drones at TAF Industries.

According to Atamanenko, the system can also distinguish between different classes of vehicles, further reducing the cognitive burden on the drone operator.

The Kolibri 10” Advance with AURA AI has already been used by Ukraine’s 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade and the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade.

AURA AI runs on a custom single-board computer developed by DOD Solution specifically for artificial-intelligence algorithms aboard FPV drones. Physically, the computer is installed as an additional board within the drone’s electronics stack.

TAF Industries said integrating AURA AI into a new drone platform typically takes about one to two weeks. Integration with the Kolibri Advance took longer because the collaboration involved additional preparation and testing beyond simply installing the module.

Previously, reports emerged that the number of successful strikes on Russian targets using AI-powered auto-homing drone technology has increased tenfold since the start of the year.
