Ukrainian Drone Strikes Using AI Target Homing Increase Tenfold, Brave1 Reports

The number of successful strikes on Russian targets using AI-powered auto-homing drone technology has increased tenfold since the start of the year, Ukraine’s defense technology cluster Brave1 reported on September 8.

Established as a government-backed defense technology cluster, Brave1 serves as Ukraine’s central hub for finding, funding, and fast-tracking battlefield innovations. The platform unites developers, the military, investors, and the state to test, certify, and scale new defense solutions.

By streamlining grants and procurement for over 1,500 companies, Brave1 aims to help Ukraine counter numerical disadvantages through rapid technological advancement.

To accelerate the procurement of automated target acquisition systems, Brave1, in coordination with the Main Department of Operational Support of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, conducted standardized testing of AI guidance modules against moving ground targets.

The trials tested multirotor drone platforms measuring 10 inches or larger with payload capacities of at least 2 kilograms. Under the testing scenario, each drone had to fly two kilometers, lock onto a moving target from over 500 meters away, and execute a fully autonomous strike without pilot input.

Of the seven participating defense companies, six successfully passed by striking the target on at least two out of three attempts, earning official procurement recommendations, Brave1 reported.

Brave1 stated that its goal is to deploy AI and machine-vision target acquisition across Ukraine’s armed forces at scale, while leaving the decision to engage autonomous guidance modes to operators during specific combat missions.

To further facilitate battlefield innovation, the cluster has also recently launched a new custom procurement feature on its Brave1 Market platform. Ukrainian military units can now bypass state mechanisms and order custom-built drones tailored to specific tactical requirements.

By setting parameters like payload weight, cameras, and flight endurance, units can submit requests that the system automatically distributes to manufacturers, conducting transparent competitive bidding to secure the lowest-priced offer.
