Ukraine to Get Tens of Thousands of SPYS Interceptor Drones Built to Hunt Russia’s Jet Shaheds

German defense company Quantum Systems plans to supply Ukraine with tens of thousands of SPYS interceptor drones designed, among other missions, to counter Russia’s new jet-powered Geran-4 and Geran-5 UAVs, company Vice President Matthias Lehna said during a press briefing in Berlin, according to Ukrinform on October 7.
“Over the weekend, an LOI [letter of intent] was signed to provide a package of tens of thousands of SPYS, which, as already mentioned, are capable of shooting down jet-powered drones,” Lehna said.

SPYS was developed jointly by Quantum Systems and Ukrainian partner WIY through their joint venture, Quantum WIY Industries.
According to the company, experience gained from operating earlier systems in Ukraine—including the STRILA interceptor drone—was incorporated directly into the development of the new platform.
Quantum Systems also said Ukraine has become significantly more effective at countering Russia’s jet-powered UAVs, which are faster and more difficult to intercept than conventional propeller-driven Shahed-type drones.

“Initially, we observed an interception capability in Ukraine at a very low percentage. Then it increased to more than 30%, and recent nights have shown an increase to more than 50%,” a company representative said.
The company stressed, however, that the improvement cannot be attributed to interceptor drones alone. Ukraine has built a layered response that combines multiple air defense systems, fighter aircraft, and increasingly specialized anti-drone platforms.
“But this is a combination of different measures. Ukraine has also adapted, deployed different capabilities, makes extensive use of its F-16 fleet, which is capable of intercepting jet-powered Shaheds. And it is increasingly using developments from companies like ours, which, within this mix of capabilities for countering the new threat, are demonstrating increasingly greater effectiveness,” the Quantum Systems representative said.

The planned SPYS package could become one of the largest interceptor-drone deliveries announced for Ukraine so far. Quantum Systems said it can build on manufacturing infrastructure already established for the STRILA interceptor, allowing production to scale quickly.
“And I’m talking here about several thousand per month,” Lehna said when discussing potential output.
Asked when Ukraine could begin receiving SPYS drones under the new package, he said deliveries could start almost immediately.
“Thousands of units are ready for delivery this year,” Lehna said.
Previously, reports emerged that Russia is increasingly using jet-powered drones in attacks against Ukraine.
Such systems now account for approximately 40% of all UAVs deployed in strikes, with their share potentially rising to around 80% in the future.
