Up to fifty Russian troops remain encircled by Ukrainian Defense Forces in the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, according to Lieutenant Colonel Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Joint Forces grouping, in comments to Ukrainska Pravda on February 4.

“Up to 50, slightly north of the city center, in the area near the hospital,” Trehubov said.

He added that the number of trapped Russian soldiers continues to decline as Ukrainian forces apply sustained pressure. According to the officer, Russian troops inside the pocket are being eliminated gradually, with several killed each day by artillery fire and drone strikes.

Earlier, on February 2, Trehubov said during a national broadcast that Russian troops who infiltrated Kupiansk in small infantry groups were effectively doomed from the outset.

The spokesperson described the overall situation on the Northern Slobozhanshchyna axis, including in Kupiansk itself, as stable and favorable for Ukrainian forces, noting that the encircled Russian contingent has little room to maneuver and no clear path to escape.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russian forces effectively trapped their own 122nd Motorized Rifle Regiment in the city of Kupiansk after prematurely reporting the area as “captured” on official paperwork while active fighting continues on the ground.
