“All Traces Lead to Russia”: Polish Officials Point to Kremlin in Train Sabotage Probe

Poland has launched a terrorism investigation following two railway sabotage incidents over the weekend, which government officials say bear the hallmarks of Russian intelligence operations.
The damaged tracks were discovered along the key Deblin-Warsaw line, a corridor frequently used to transport aid to Ukraine.
According to Radio Zet, a second explosive device and video recording equipment were found at the scene, while RMF reports that authorities have traced SIM cards used to remotely trigger the explosion. These cards were allegedly purchased in a manner consistent with efforts to conceal the buyer’s identity.

On Tuesday, the spokesperson for Poland’s special services coordinator, Jacek Dobrzyński, stated that “everything indicates” Russian intelligence was behind the incidents. “We can already confidently call it a terrorist attack… initiated by special services from the East,” he said, according to The Guardian on November 18.
Dobrzyński declined to give specifics about the investigation to avoid tipping off those responsible. “The Russian services would very much want to have this information,” he added.
Speaking to Radio Zet, Poland’s Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also linked the acts to Moscow.
“All the traces lead east to Russia,” he said, emphasizing that although the perpetrators are still being sought, the nature of the operation aligns with Russia’s broader strategy. “This is part of the war they are waging against NATO, against Europe, against us — a hybrid war,” he added.

He described the sabotage as one element in a broader campaign involving cyberattacks, disinformation, and attempts to disrupt infrastructure and civil order across Europe.
On Monday, Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had opened an investigation into “acts of sabotage of a terrorist nature directed against railway infrastructure and committed for the benefit of foreign intelligence,” The Guardian reported.
Earlier, Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that the track damage was deliberate and likely intended to target a moving train. The incident occurred on a rail line between Warsaw and Lublin, a critical supply route for Ukraine.
