A Czech-based international open-source intelligence group says at least 7,900 Russian officers have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to the KIU Russian Officers killed in Ukraine latest update on March 2.

The team states that the figure represents the minimum number confirmed through Russian sources, including public obituaries, grave records, and memorial plaques. The weekly update added 51 newly registered officer deaths.

The data highlights the significant attrition within Russia’s officer corps over more than two years of high-intensity warfare.

The update came as Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi described what he called a decisive winter phase of the war. “We stood firm in this difficult ‘battle for winter’,” Syrskyi said.

According to the Ukrainian military leader, Russian forces suffered approximately 92,850 killed and wounded over the three winter months—an average of 1,031 casualties per day.

Syrskyi said Ukrainian troops not only absorbed sustained Russian pressure but also stabilized key front-line sectors and regained territory in several areas.

Separately, Ukrainian special operations forces reportedly struck a Russian S-400 air defense unit in temporarily occupied Crimea, destroying a launcher and killing personnel, including a senior officer.

Open-source investigators identified the killed officer as Lieutenant Colonel Khasan Tumgoyev, who commanded a battalion within Russia’s S-400 surface-to-air missile system. His death was confirmed by local media outlets in Russia’s Republic of Ingushetia, his home region.
