American Rapper DaBaby Dedicates New Track to Ukrainian Refugee Killed in North Carolina

American rapper DaBaby has released a new song and video dedicated to Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee killed in North Carolina in August. The video for the track Save Me depicts the events leading up to her death, with an alternate ending in which the attack is prevented.
According to New York Post on September 17, the video begins with a news segment reporting on Zarutska’s killing. DaBaby is shown riding a train where the incident took place, while an actress portrays the 23-year-old Ukrainian.
In one sequence, she sits across from a man in a red sweatshirt, representing the accused attacker, DeCarlos Brown Jr.
The video reproduces the scene captured by surveillance cameras: the suspect sits in silence, rubs his head, and then reaches into his pocket for a knife. In DaBaby’s version, however, another man stops the attack at the last moment.

At the end of the clip, the rapper includes a screenshot of the fundraising platform that collected more than $430,000 for Zarutska’s family. A link to the campaign is also attached to the video description, accompanied by the note “Dedicated to Iryna Zarutska.”
Zarutska, who had fled the Russia’s war in Ukraine, was fatally stabbed on August 22 while traveling by train in Charlotte, North Carolina. Police detained 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr. immediately after the incident.
Local media reported that Brown had previous arrests for theft, armed robbery, and threats, as well as a prison sentence for illegal possession of a deadly weapon.
Earlier, President Donald Trump called for the death penalty for the man accused of killing Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte, North Carolina, writing on Truth Social that “the animal who so brutally murdered a beautiful young girl from Ukraine… must be swiftly sentenced to death. There is no other choice.”
