Azerbaijan will provide Ukraine with electrical equipment as part of its humanitarian support, according to a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on August 11.

Under the decision, Azerbaijan will supply humanitarian aid to Ukraine in the form of electrical equipment purchased with funds from the state budget. A total of $2 million will be allocated from President Aliyev’s reserve fund for this purpose.

The Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan will be responsible for procuring and delivering the equipment, while the Ministry of Finance will handle the funding. The Cabinet of Ministers will coordinate the overall implementation of the decree.

The document stresses that the decision was taken in line with the principles of humanitarianism and the partnership between Azerbaijan and Ukraine, as outlined in a number of bilateral agreements and declarations — including the 2000 Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership, and the Joint Statement of the Presidents dated January 14, 2022.

In a further boost to bilateral cooperation, Ukraine has begun importing Azerbaijani natural gas through the Trans-Balkan route for the first time, according to a statement from the state-owned company Naftogaz on July 28, citing its CEO, Serhii Koretskyi.

Naftogaz Group has signed its first agreement to purchase Azerbaijani gas from a company within the SOCAR Group.

“A test delivery is being carried out along the route Bulgaria–Romania–the Ukrainian border. While the volume is relatively small, this is a strategically important step that paves the way for long-term cooperation. It is also another example of diversifying supply sources and strengthening Ukraine’s energy security,” Koretskyi said.

Earlier, it was reported that Azerbaijan plans to file a case with the International Criminal Court against Russia over the downing of an AZAL passenger plane near Aktau.
