Canada Negotiates Contribution to EU’s €90 Billion Support Package for Ukraine

Canada is in talks to contribute to the European Union’s €90 billion loan for Ukraine, as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks to deepen ties with European partners, accoeding to European Pravda pn September 14, citing Financial Times.
According to the sources, Canada and the EU hope to reach an agreement on the size of Ottawa’s contribution to the Ukraine Support Loan ahead of a summit in Montreal in late October.

The discussions come as Carney seeks to strengthen cooperation among liberal democracies committed to a multilateral international order, which the sources said has faced growing disruption under US President Donald Trump. A Canadian contribution to the loan would also demonstrate Ottawa’s commitment to its European allies, according to the report.
The United Kingdom is currently the only non-EU country participating in the loan initiative.
The negotiations are expected to feature in Carney’s broader engagement with European partners this week. The Canadian prime minister is due to meet European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Strasbourg on Wednesday before traveling to Liverpool, where he is expected to hold talks with newly appointed UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
Accoding to European Pravda, a European official expressed appreciation for Canada’s support for Ukraine, adding that the EU was ready to deepen cooperation with Ottawa as it seeks to forge closer ties with the country.
The talks follow a further expansion of relations between Kyiv and Ottawa. On September 10, Ukraine and Canada signed several bilateral agreements, including a declaration outlining plans to establish a 100-year partnership.
During their meeting in Calgary, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also discussed financial and defense support for Ukraine, including Canada’s potential participation in the FREYJA anti-ballistic program and cooperation on drone production.
