Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced in Kyiv on August 24 that Canada will transfer a $1.5 billion package of military assistance to Ukraine in September. The announcement was made during his visit to mark Ukraine’s 34th Independence Day.

According to the Canadian government, the package will be distributed across five key areas. About $570 million will go toward procurement of critical equipment, including armored vehicles, medical supplies, spare parts, small arms, ammunition, explosives, and expanded drone capabilities.

An additional $500 million will finance military equipment sourced through the United States to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and other NATO-identified priority needs.

Canada will also allocate $150 million for drones, counter-drone systems, and electronic warfare equipment, part of which will support joint projects between Ukrainian and Canadian defense industries.

Another $112 million will be directed to support Canada’s role in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, and $68.2 million will be invested in ammunition supplies under the Czech initiative.

Carney noted that, beyond this package, Canada will provide tens of millions in emergency aid, including funding for bomb shelters and cybersecurity support. He also emphasized Canada’s commitment as co-chair of the international coalition working to secure the return of Ukrainian children taken abroad.

The Canadian government highlighted that this aid is part of the additional $2 billion in military assistance pledged at the G7 summit in June.

Alongside defense commitments, Ottawa has expanded sanctions against Russia, targeting individuals, more than 40 organizations, and over 200 vessels associated with the so-called Russian “shadow fleet” used to bypass restrictions on oil exports.

Earlier, in July, Canada pledged an additional $14.6 million to support the repair and maintenance of Leopard 2 tanks at a logistics facility in Poland, bringing its total military aid to Ukraine to $4.78 billion since February 2022.
