Three Ships Hit by Projectiles Near Strait of Hormuz, Thai Vessel Catches Fire

Three vessels were hit by projectiles in and near the Strait of Hormuz, including a Thai-flagged bulk carrier that caught fire after an apparent strike, according to Reuters on March 11.
The incidents brought the number of ships attacked in the area since the Iran conflict began on February 28 to at least 14.

Precious Shipping stated its Thailand-flagged vessel, Mayuree Naree, was hit by two projectiles of unknown origin while transiting the strait. The strike caused a fire and damaged the engine room.
The company reported that 20 crew members were evacuated safely to Oman. It added that three crew members were missing and were believed trapped in the engine room.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards stated through Tasnim that Mayuree Naree was “fired upon by Iranian fighters,” in what appeared to be the first direct engagement by the force against a commercial vessel in the current conflict.

Maritime security companies reported that the Japan-flagged container ship ONE Majesty was hit by an unknown projectile northwest of Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates.
Its owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and charterer, Ocean Network Express, stated that the ship remained operational after minor damage above the waterline.
A third vessel, the Marshall Islands-flagged Star Gwyneth, was also struck northwest of Dubai. Maritime risk firm Vanguard and owner Star Bulk Carriers reported hull damage, but no injuries or listing.

Iranian strike came after US forces struck the lead Shahid Soleimani–class missile corvette, IRIS Shahid Soleimani, while it was anchored near Bandar Abbas, with footage indicating a hit to the stern, but the ship remained afloat.
The strike was described as the second visually confirmed hit on a warship of this modern IRGC Navy class, following earlier reported damage to the sister ship Sayyad Shirazi, with indications that up to three vessels may have been hit.
A CENTCOM statement said the campaign is aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to project power at sea and threaten freedom of navigation, as the Shahid Soleimani class represents Tehran’s shift toward larger, more heavily armed platforms.
